A Quebec-based chemical plant intended to recover one of the by-products generated from the process plant to produce ferric sulphate. the client decided to install a new production line in the factory to produce ferric sulphate. The new production line will include filtration steps,' and therefore, STS Canada was mandated to identify, size and test a filtration technology suited to the needs of the process using a pilot-scale.
The challenge related to this project was in identifying and dimensioning the filtration technology most suited to obtaining an excellent clarity filtrate. the filtration technology must respect restrictions such as the volume to be treated (120T / d of filtrate), aggressive operating conditions (liquid at 90 ° C and pH 1) and limited available space.
First, STS Canada conducted several laboratory analyses to obtain the characteristics of the pulp, liquid and solids. Once the characteristics of the pulp to be filtered and the design criteria defined, STS Canada proceeded to the first stage of the selection of filtration equipment. This first selection step was identified using the internal tools developed by STS that made it possible to select 5 technologies for this application. Subsequently, STS Canada carried out filtration tests on a pilot scale to collect the necessary information for the sizing of the filtration unit. Once the necessary filtration parameters have been obtained, a second selection process has made it possible to identify the filtration technology most suited to the present application. Finally, quotes were requested from several equipment manufacturers available at the STS database selecting a list of suppliers offering the best technical and commercial offer.
Following the intervention of STS Canada, the most filtration equipment suitable was identified and sized for clarifying the ferric sulphate pulp. Thanks to STS Canada's comprehensive supplier database, the manufacturer offered the techno-commercial offer and transferred it to the customer. Also, all the drawings, operating conditions and technical data sheets of the selected filter have been given to the customer to enable the client to purchase the equipment.
