As part of obtaining a depollution attestation of an aluminum smelter, the Ministry of the Environment asked to assess the air emissions of fluorides from a warehouse used to cool anode butts and skips in electrolytic cell baths.
The Ministry of the Environment required that total particulate matter, gaseous fluoride, particulate and total emissions be measured at the outlet of warehouse roof fans.
STS Canada was mandated to supervise the execution of this sampling campaign and write the emission report to prepare the depollution attestation request.
As part of the sampling campaign in collecting necessary samples to obtain the depollution attestation, it was critical to identify a method approved by the department as well as the instrumentation required for the simultaneous measurement of total particulate emissions and fluorine at the outlet of warehouse roof fans.
STS Canada has identified sampling protocol approved by the ministry suitable for measuring the total particulate matters, gaseous fluoride, particulate and total emissions from warehouse roof fans.
Additionally, STS Canada provided the necessary instrumentation to conduct the measurements and supervised the execution of this sampling campaign.
The measurements of emissions of total particles, gaseous fluoride, particulate matter was successfully implemented following the sampling protocol and the requirement of the Ministry of the Environment. The obtained results enabled the aluminum smelter to know the emissions at the outlet of each roof fan in the warehouse and ultimately to finalize their depollution attestation request.
